When to Book Flights – Some Thoughts on Airfare Trends

It seems like every few months, someone comes up with the latest and greatest formula for when to book flights.  Do you book early, or wait to the last minute?  Other than booking 43.784 days in advance, rounded to the nearest lunar eclipse, while standing on one leg in pajamas with feet on them (having feet on them is the critical part), I can’t give much of a guarantee on the lifelong question. But I did recently notice a trend while planning a trip, and I thought I’d share. The Story I needed to book a trip to Atlanta, and Continue reading When to Book Flights – Some Thoughts on Airfare Trends

Delta has launched a sale on flights to Oslo, Norway from a number of destinations, including Jacksonville, FL, Ft. Lauderdale, FL, Newark, NJ and even the tiny airport of Daytona Beach, FL.  Many flights can be found from those cities for under $500 roundtrip! Norway is on the shortlist for the Mrs. Guru and I as there are some beautiful areas to see in Scandinavia – although it’ll probably have to wait until after our current list of upcoming trips to Charleston, the Bahamas, San Francisco, Greece/Turkey, the Cayman Islands, and Argentina/Uruguay/Peru :-).  If you want to read more specifically Continue reading Flights to Oslo from Jacksonville, FL (and more cities) – $482

Review: The Prescott Hotel San Francisco

A few weeks ago, I had the chance to stay at The Prescott Hotel in downtown San Francisco.  The Prescott is a member of Kimpton Hotels, a somewhat lesser-known chain of boutique hotels.  Kimpton has about 30 hotels in about 15 cities across the US, and they focus on adding personal touches to guests’ stays.  Just for being a member of their loyalty program (called Kimpton InTouch, which is completely free to join), you are offered free WiFi at all their hotels as well as a $10 credit towards the in-room minibar or the hotel restaurant/bar.  It’s really a nice Continue reading Review: The Prescott Hotel San Francisco

Flights to Greece from Chicago – $674 roundtrip

Several airlines, including Turkish Airlines and United Airlines, are offering a sale on flights to Greece from Chicago….roundtrip flights are as low as $674.  While this doesn’t fall during the peak summer travel period, Greece can get pretty crowded then, so visiting during the off-season can avoid the crowds (and also has the advantage of lower hotel rates). Thessaloniki is the second largest city in Greece, and offers easy access to just about anywhere else…it’s a quick 45 minute flight to Athens, Santorini, or other beautiful islands.  I’ve found that Athens is a good city to visit for about 2-3 Continue reading Flights to Greece from Chicago – $674 roundtrip

Use British Airways Points on US Airways…and Why You Care

As of March 31, US Airways officially changed partnerships, leaving the Star Alliance (which includes United, Lufthansa, Singapore, Thai, etc….see here for the full list) and they are now part of the Oneworld Alliance (which includes American Airlines, British Airways, Qantas, etc…see here for the full list). Blah, blah, blah, why does this matter?  Hang tight, I’m getting there, so stay with me… The move of US Airways from Star Alliance to Oneworld has both positive and negative impacts.  For the everyday traveler, it won’t make too much of a difference, but for the savvy traveler (aka you!), there is Continue reading Use British Airways Points on US Airways…and Why You Care
