40% Bonus on Amex Transfers to British Airways

American Express just announced a 40% bonus when transferring Amex Membership Rewards Points to British Airways Avios until January 31, 2015.  If you happen to be one of my loyal readers (read: Mrs. Guru), you may already be somewhat familiar with why this is a big deal.  I’ve posted a few times in the past few months about how useful British Airways Avios can be, but here’s the spoiler: for folks in North Carolina, you could fly anywhere within 650 miles of Charlotte (including Freeport, Bahamas) for less than 6,500 points roundtrip!  If this makes no sense to you, I’ve Continue reading 40% Bonus on Amex Transfers to British Airways

Flights to San Jose, CA from Charlotte – $285 roundtrip

American and US Airways have dropped prices on flights to San Jose, CA from Charlotte, NC to $288 roundtrip, and other airlines are matching the prices.  San Jose is just south of San Francisco, and just north of the beautiful area of Monterrey and Carmel. The Mrs. Guru and I spent some time in Monterrey and Carmel in June, and it’s definitely worth the drive (about 2 hours from San Francisco, 1 hour and 15 minutes from San Jose). This sale is only valid for a pretty narrow range of dates in early December, but if you can make it Continue reading Flights to San Jose, CA from Charlotte – $285 roundtrip

Quick Weekend in the Bahamas: Flights and Grand Lucayan Resort

Quick Weekend in the Bahamas Part 1: Intro and Comfort Suites Charlotte Airport Part 2: US Airways Flights Charlotte, NC to/from Freeport and Grand Lucayan Resort Part 3: Bahamas Taxi Scam After a pleasant – and free! – stay at the Comfort Suites Charlotte Airport, we hopped on their complimentary shuttle to the airport.  Door-to-door, the shuttle took less than 10 minutes until we were dropped off at the US Airways departure area.  Check-in was relatively quick, and made our way to the US Airways Club lounge, located between the C and D concourses. The lounge is relatively large, although Continue reading Quick Weekend in the Bahamas: Flights and Grand Lucayan Resort

Booking an Amazing Trip to South America

Not long ago, I finished booking a trip to South America for the Mrs. Guru and I.  Neither of us have been to South America before, so we’re very excited about the trip.  I wanted to share my booking process with you all so that you can see how you might be able to put together a trip like this. Trip Overview We’ll first be spending several days in Buenos Aires, Argentina (with a day trip over to Montevideo, Uruguay), and several days in Lima, Peru, including a visit to Machu Picchu (near the city of Cusco).  The routing for Continue reading Booking an Amazing Trip to South America

Initial Thoughts – Overview of the Bahamas

The Mrs. Guru and I just got back from a quick weekend down in the Bahamas.  I’ll be sharing a full trip report with more details shortly, but wanted to post an initial overview of the Bahamas and how our trip went (make sure to read the taxi scam info at the bottom!) Before the Flight The night before the trip, we stayed in Charlotte at the Comfort Suites Airport on a free stay, courtesy of the Choice Hotels Best Rate Guarantee.  When looking into the that stay, I found a lower rate on another website (compared to the official Continue reading Initial Thoughts – Overview of the Bahamas

Blah, blah, blah, why does this matter?  Hang tight, I’m getting there, so stay with me… The move of US Airways from Star Alliance to Oneworld has both positive and negative impacts.  For the everyday traveler, it won’t make too much of a difference, but for the savvy traveler (aka you!), there is Continue reading Use British Airways Points on US Airways…and Why You Care

Earn 50% More Miles with American and US Airways

As American Airlines and US Airways begin their merger process, they’ve begun adding benefits to both sides.  As of now, you can redeem American miles for flights on US Airways, and vice versa.  On the flip side, you can also credit mileage earned when flying to either airline (when the merger is complete, the miles you hold with each airline will be merged together).  It seems as though the airlines are trying to get passengers used to the idea of the two airlines becoming one.  So starting today, through March 2, 2014, they’re adding an extra incentive for you to Continue reading Earn 50% More Miles with American and US Airways
