Hope everyone here in the US had a Happy 4th of July yesterday!
Delta has launched a great sale on flights to Australia from several cities, including Raleigh and Charlotte for as low as $1077 roundtrip. This is the lowest fare I’ve seen to Australia from the east coast in a long time! Plus, these fares are valid through much of the fall and winter here, which is summertime in Australia (since Australia is in the southern hemisphere, their seasons are opposite to ours here in the northern hemisphere).
The lowest fares can be found between now and December 8, and again from February through June, 2015. Below is a calendar of fares from Raleigh to Sydney for August, 2014:
Sample Itinerary:
The itinerary above involves just one quick connection in LA in both directions. Both times that I’ve flown to Australia, however, I’ve taken a different approach: I’ve flown out to the west coast early in the morning, and then visited friends out in the city during the day. This really helps break up the trip, and kept me from feeling like I had been traveling endlessly. By getting to the west coast early, leaving the airport for 8-10 hours, and freshening up with a shower before heading back to the airport, the long overnight flight felt much more do-able. Even if you don’t have friends to see, it could even be worth $75-$100 to grab a hotel room for the day just to have somewhere to grab a shower after doing some sightseeing.
Even though the flights to Australia are long, I really don’t find them to be that bad. Especially if you take the option of flying out to the west coast early in the morning, by the time the overnight flight leaves around 10:30 pm, your body should be pretty tired and ready to sleep. Even on a plane, it’s much easier to sleep when your body thinks it’s 1:30 am as opposed to 6:00-7:00 pm, when many flights to Europe leave the east coast. So don’t let the long flights to Australia scare you – I promise you can make it through!
Here’s an option with a flight out to LA early in the morning, leaving you 12 hours to get a break from traveling:
This fare is also available from Charlotte, although it involves one extra stop in each direction (since Delta doesn’t have any nonstop flights from Charlotte to LA):
All in all, this is a great opportunity to take a “bucket list” trip to Australia. I’d definitely recommend booking these flights quickly if you’re interested.
